Name: Anelise Shrout
Degree: AB History Hon. Ireland and Britain, 19th century
Year: 2006
First Year Out: PhD program at NYU in Atlantic World History, with a focus on 19th century Ireland
Status as of Summer 2006: First year PhD student
Future Goals: Professional researcher, College professor
Advice to Current Students: The grad school application process is a little daunting, especially since it overlaps with the early stages of the BA. I was cautioned to take a year off before applying, and although I didn't end up taking that advice, think that it is something to consider seriously. Some schools are wary of students just out of college, and prefer to take more mature applicants, who presumably have tried the "real world" for long enough to make their commitment to academia fairly strong. Be proactive with college administrators, both within and without the department. If you want to study something specific (19th century Ireland, in my case) but the U(C) doesn't offer enough classes to create a major field, seek out other departments or even the study abroad programs. Make friends with your BA advisor, having them on your side, both academically and emotionally, is indescribably helpful.

Name: Sascha Fishman
Degree: AB History, Early American
Year: 2006
First Year Out/Status of Summer 2006:  Employed as a Human Resources Representative, working at NORC.
Future Goals: Business school for non-profit management and development.
Advice to current students: Study what you love. The skills you develop reading critically, writing a thesis in history or literature, interacting and conversing intelligently with professors and graduate students, and studying hard and proactively will serve you well in whatever your chosen profession may be.
In Alumni Careers Network: Planning on it.

Name: Stephanie Dock
Degree: AB History, Urban
Year: 2006
First Year Out: Hired as a Project 55 Fellow* with the nonprofit Center for Neighborhood Technology in Chicago. Working on implementation of economic development plans in two south Chicago suburbs, and on various research projects related to transit. (*program matches recent grads with nonprofits)
Status as of Summer 2006: Working
Future Goals: Attend graduate school, after I decide whether to do a professional degree (like urban planning) or to continue on in History (probably to get a PhD). I don't want to be in academia as of right now.
Advice to current students: I've not been out long enough to really know much, but a solid social science background is looking pretty useful right now - I'm very glad I took statistics and am really wishing I knew some economics right now.
