Even if you’re still years away from graduation, it’s a very (very!) good idea to at least get an idea of what options are out there. While it’s never too late to start getting materials together for a job search, the sooner you get an idea of the available options and what you need to get the job you want the better. While it is true that your philosophy degree gives you the skills to succeed in many, many jobs, prospective employers are also keen to see that you’ve expressed an interest in their field before you show up for an interview! So get a sense of what kinds of jobs and internships (perhaps related to the career path you want to pursue) are out there. And, as always, take advantage of the vast amount of expertise in CAPS to help you plan for a future with multiple options.
UChicagoTRAK and CAPS
The first place to look is UChicagoTRAK at caps.uchicago.edu/uchicagotrak/. And take advantage of Annalee Letchinger (aletchin@uchicago.edu), a CAPS career counselor and Corynne Cooper (corynne@uchicago.edu), a Student and Employer Relations Specialist at CAPS: they are both on the philosophy PRISM team and able to offer specialized advice to philosophy majors.
